About Us
The New York State Small Business Development Center (NYS/SBDC) at Plattsburgh is part of a statewide network of business assistance centers supported by the State University of New York and the U.S. Small Business Administration. We are physically located at 194 US Oval at the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base. The New York State SBDC is accredited by the Association of Small Business Centers (ASBDC) and has more than two decades of serving the small business community. SBDC business advisors help individuals pursue entrepreneurship and help business owners grow and adjust to challenges in the community caused by changes in the economic situation.
The NYS/SBDC at Plattsburgh is charged with assisting North Country entrepreneurs, small business, and industry through advising, training, and research. Additionally, the SBDC provides needed services to manufacturers, women, veterans, minority, and physically challenged individuals, or on businesses impacted in distressed and targeted areas. Counseling services are free and confidential.
By assisting new and existing small business firms, the NYS/SBDC at Plattsburgh directly contributes to local, regional, and State economics, promoting stability and growth.
The School of Business and Economics began as part of the Administrative Sciences and Economics Department. During the period from 1969 to 1975 the individual departments of management, marketing and accounting were developed. Shortly after that time the individualized departments expanded to become a School with SUNY Plattsburgh. The School of Business and Economics is physically located in Redcay Hall on Beekman Street. The School is comprised of 29 full-time faculty members, 24 who hold a Ph.D. in their field.
The mission of the School of Business and Economics is to provide a broad-based education with a global emphasis and experientially-based opportunities for students, business outreach activities to the region, encouragement and support for faculty development, scholarship, and research, and an environment in which all stakeholders contribute synergistically to continuous improvement.
The School of Business and Economics, accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), offers degrees in the following programs
- Accounting
- Economics & Finance
- Entrepreneurship
- Global Supply Chain Management
- Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management
- International Business

The designated area of the North Country SBDC is rural in nature. The dispersed nature of the population creates a unique opportunity for innovation in small business service delivery. The focus of this project is virtual access to small business programs through a web portal. This new mode of accessibility throughout the regional counseling area will be readily replicated in similar rural communities across the nation. The electronic sessions, CD's, templates and other tools on the site are specifically developed for this project. The portal is THE starting point for business information and resources in the region. The portal is a vehicle for companies to register for roundtable discussions to share information, experiences and best practices and to receive input from the SBDC, SBE faculty, business student consultants and regional experts.
